Worries over future flooding in west Hull

RESIDENTS in Boothferry Road, west Hull, have called for improvements to the drainage system after an area under a bridge flooded again.

Just over a year ago, the dip under the bridge across the road was one of the first areas to flood following the downpours on June 15 and June 25.

A picture taken on Saturday by Boothferry Road resident Peter Tasker show, once again the road flooded, although this time after much less rainfall.

Now residents have urged action, fearing if the same volume of water were to fall on the city again, the devastation would be as catastrophic.

Mr Tasker told the Mail: “Before last year the only worry when it rained was whether you had left any washing out but now you fear for your property and your car.

“The worry is real and it is not fair we have to live with that.

“It is simply not good enough that the road fills up after such a small amount of rain as we had before the weekend.”

And Mr Tasker said the he felt the gullies were not been cleaned enough.

He said: “Everyone is talking about being more prepared and better equipped but I can't see how that is.”

However, a Hull City council spokeswoman told the Mail the authority had not been alerted to the problem, and had it, then a response would have been mounted.

She said: “If a member of the public notices rising water we would ask them to call (01482) 300300 to report the problem to us so we can respond to the issue appropriately.

“Now that we have been made aware of this problem we will visit the site today.”
