Catchment Flood Management Plans - North East Region

We are starting to look at how we can manage flood risk to protect people, property and the environment in the longer term. The first step of this is developing Catchment Flood Management Plans.

In total there are 13 Catchment Flood Management Plans due to be completed in 2008. These will aim to:

• look for more sustainable ways to reduce flood risk;
• understand flood risk, now and in the future;
• prevent inappropriate building in flood risk areas;
• plan for the likely impacts of climate change in the future;
• look for wider opportunities to reduce flood risk, such as better land use and management.

It is extremely important that we work with other local planning authorities, landowners, local communities and other groups who have an interest in each area.

Plans will be produced for the following rivers: Wear, Tyne, Till and Breamish, North East Northumberland, Aire, Don, Wansbeck and Blyth, Calder, Derwent, Hull, Esk, Ouse.

Opinions on the relevant documents must be sent to the Environment Agency at the address below by mid July. The specific return date will be advised when document is sent to you.
