Minister promises to help flood families get back in their own homes

Saturday, September 13, 2008.

FLOODS recovery Minister John Healey has promised to do everything he can to get people back in their homes after the latest figures revealed almost 1,500 families are still living in temporary accommodation.

The latest figures showing the number of people still displaced from their homes following last summer's floods have been released - three months after the Mail launched its Back Home campaign.

The campaign aims to speed up the return to their homes of flood-hit families by highlighting their plight.

According to the figures, 1,054 households in Hull are still unable to move back into their homes, while a further 410 remain displaced in the East Riding.

The latest figures, released to the Mail by the local authorities, reveal 126 families, including 46 in Hull and 80 in the East Riding, have moved back home in the past two weeks.

The figures are based on the number of families claiming council tax relief while they are still unable to live at home.

Speaking after a meeting with the Association of British Insurers, Mr Healey said it is his priority is to "ensure everything possible is being done to support the local recovery operation and to get people back home".

His comments come after Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, who visited East Yorkshire on Wednesday, promised to talk to the insurance industry about those families not yet back in their homes.

Mr Benn said: "I intend to talk to the insurance companies about how we can further help those people who are still out of their homes."

He met with insurance industry leaders to hear how they are dealing with insurance claims following the latest floods.
